This talk will present ideas promoted by translation theorists such as Antoine Berman (1985), writing in French, on the effects of word-for-word translation and word-for word commentary of texts. Berman's argument that a focus on the 'word' of a source text will valorize translation after centuries of disrespect and abuse will be tested in analyses of word-for-word English translations of the creation myth, the story of Adam and Eve, told in the Old Testament of the Christian Bible. The feminist aspect of these three translations dating from the 1850s (by Julia Evelina Smith), the 1890s (by Elizabeth Cady Stanton) and the 1990s (by Mary Phil Korsak) will be presented as also, in their turn, countering the disrespect and abuse of women.
