內容摘要:
This lecture explains principles of argument and their application in practical settings.? It is intended to create a balance between theoretical understanding and practical use of argument in everyday life. Four major principles of argument will be studied:
Stasis. This refers to the grounds upon which to build an argument during a controversy, for maximum success;
Presumption and burden of proof. This refers to who has the responsibility to prove a case in argument, and who does not;
Stephen Toulmin’s model of argument: This is a useful model for strengthening one’s own argument and detecting flaws in another’s argument;
Classical syllogisms and the rhetorical syllogism: the enthymeme: This is a theory for understanding how everyday argument works in contrast to more formal argument, or logic.
The listener to this lecture should be able to understand better how argument works and also to construct more effective arguments in everyday life.
This lecture is based on the assumption that the class will interact with the lecturer, to speak in class, and to think about how to apply these principles to their own experiences.
